Nellore: Lightning burns notes, farmer's hopes in flames

The notes mostly in Rs 500 and Rs 2000 denomination, were damaged when lightning struck his thatched-roof house.

The paper used for FICN is thicker than the one used in the production of original notes, which can be identified if observed closely, officials said.

NELLORE: A farmhand, K. Subbaiah has been doing rounds of the offices of district authorities and ruling party leaders to replace burnt currency notes worth Rs 4.85 lakh.

The notes mostly in Rs 500 and Rs 2000 denomination, were damaged when lightning struck his thatched-roof house at Basavayapalem in Kodavalur mandal on August 16. The cash was received by him and his son as advance payment for the sale of 27 cents of their land to clear their debts. The cash was concealed in a plastic cover and was damaged in the incident. Mr Subbaiah said that revenue officials said that they can only pay Rs 8,000 to rebuild the damaged thatched house.
