S. Rajesh (35) of Nadukuppam in Triplicane owns the eight-year-old horse, Stephan, and rents it out for wedding processions and joy rides on Marina beach for a living.

On Monday afternoon, a group of men tried to kill the horse near Rajesh’s house. He stepped out on hearing its neigh and saw the group fleeing. He was shocked to find the horse lying in a pool of blood and took it to the Government Veterinary Hospital in Vepery. Hospital sources said that the doctors had to put 47 stitches on the neck.

The horse is said to be out of danger. Based on Rajesh’s complaint, Marina police registered a case and are investigating.

Meanwhile, police picked up A. Kareem (18), R. Vignesh (18), B. Vishal (19), R. Karthik (22) and a minor from Nadukuppam on Wednesday night. Gokul, the main accused, is yet to be detained.

According to police sources, the five-member gang had attempted to break open a car window to steal valuables last month and were arrested.
