Ships back to business after polls

Rameswaram: A dredging ship and 23 other fishing boats crossed the Pamban pass here on Tuesday, signaling the return of the shipping business after a tumultuous Lok Sabha election.

 As the two leaves of the famous cantilever Pamban rail bridge over the sea, connecting the sacred pilgrim island of Rameswaram with the mainland, went up majestically today, a  dredging ship from Mallipattinam to Mookaiyoor fishing port  and 23 fishing boats smoothly crossed the Pamban pass.

Chandrasekar, a tourist from Chennai said it was a delight to see the lifting spans of the cantilever bridge, the first one built by the erstwhile British rulers in the country even before the Hooghly bridge in Howrah near Calcutta in West Bengal, go up and to witness the ships pass by beneath in the calm waters.
