Acute drinking water shortage in Nizamabad

Nizamabad: Supply of drinking water across Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and Bodhan municipality has been hit severely by the shortage of Manjeera water. Municipal officials In Bodhan are supplying drinking water on alternative days.

Water evaporation in tanks is fast due to high temperatures. The main drinking water source for Nizamabad and Bodhan towns has been the Nizamsagar project and its balancing reservoir Singur. These projects reached dead storage level due to lack of inflows from upstream areas.

Reportedly, the existing water storage could cater the drinking water needs till the end of May. Civic officials are worried over the supply of drinking water beyond that. Nizamabad mayor Akula Sujatha held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to review the water supply situation. She directed officials to dig new borewells as well as arrange water tankers to supply water to different areas.

The district collector M. Rammohan Rao had brought the drinking water situation to the notice of the state government urging the higher-ups to release 0.5 tmc water from Singur for drinking water needs of Nizamabad and Bodhan towns. Manjeera water will be released on May 30.  Within a couple of days, water will reach both the towns.

Speaking to this correspondent, Bodhan municipal chairman A. Yellaiah said that water is available in Bellal cheruvu which caters to the drinking water needs for next 10 days. “We are hopeful that release of Manjeera water on May 30 will overcome the problem till monsoon is reached” he said.

“We had never experienced such acute water shortage in Bodhan in the past” he said. This summer is the worst affected drinking water supply, he said.
