A little investment in the Signalling and Telecommunication sector of the Railways will bring in much improvement and speeds could be increased substantially

Hyderabad: Dismissing fears over high-speed trains, Railway Board Chairman A.K. Mittal on Saturday said average speeds of trains in India should be gradually increased.

“Japan’s Shinkansen (Bullet Trains) have been running at top speeds of upto 320 kmph for decades now with an accident-free track record. A little investment in the Signalling and Telecommunication sector of the Railways will bring in much improvement and speeds could be increased substantially,” he said, at an event in the city on Saturday.

Mr Mittal also spoke about the need for safety, punctuality and cleanliness which he said, will ultimately lead towards increased passenger satisfaction. He also told officials to monitor social media and use it as as a grievance redressal tool.

And while admitting Indian Railways was lagging behind in infrastructure, Mr Mittal said this was because developed countries had gone in for large-scale modernisation whereas the Indian Railways, had not.
