Chennai: In a bid to reduce pollution and roll out green electric buses in Chennai, the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday signed a pact with the 
C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group at the secretariat. 

The state transport department officials led by transport minister M. R. vijayabhaskar and transport secretary P .W .C. Dawidar signed the agreement with C- 40 Low Emission Vehicle Network, a wing of the C-40 group, that   helps cities to transform their building stock for a low carbon future.

The high level function was chaired by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and stake holders in the group explained about the advantages in bringing the electric buses in operation to a city like Chennai.

The C40 Low Emission Vehicle Network is currently working with C40 cities that are pursuing cleaner vehicle technologies to help reduce transport emissions.

The network serves as a platform for C40 cities to share best practices and policies to reduce emissions by promoting the use of electric buses and other modes of transport. The road conditions of Chennai and the logistics required to import electric buses will be worked on and the project will get impetus in the days to come, informed sources, who attended the event ,told DC.

Chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan and C 40 deputy executive director Kevin Austin and clean energy director James Alexander were among those present on the occasion.

It may be noted that under the C 40 network, clean energy programme, Chennai has entered in to a global agreement to promote clean energy and had also sort the expertise of other cities working on clean energy and urban solutions.
