National Highway toll plazas will issue FASTags on the spot for vehicles entering dedicated lanes from December 1. They may be charged a double penal fee for entering dedicated lanes without FASTags.

Hyderabad: The regional officer of the National Highway Authority of India, Rao, on Wednesday said that FASTags will become mandatory for all vehicles from December 1, 2019 under the national electronic toll collection (NETC) programme.

Speaking to this newspaper, Rao said that the FASTag device is designed to employ radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to make toll payments directly while the vehicle is in motion. He said that the NHAI regional office in Hyderabad made all the arrangements at the toll plazas on national highways in the state to collect the toll through the FASTag device.

He explained that the FASTag will be affixed to the windscreen of the vehicle and enable a customer to make the toll payments directly from their account, linked to FASTag.

Explaining how a FASTag works, he said whenever a vehicle passes through the electronic toll collection lane of a toll plaza, the toll plaza system will capture the FASTag details like (Tag ID, Vehicle class, TID) and send it for processing to the acquiring bank.
