Among other major cities, Mumbai (up 12 per cent) was the only city to exhibit double-digit annual growth rate.

Hyderabad: With the help of the prohibition and excise department, bootleggers who used to manufacture illicit liquor in Dhoolpet, would soon turn into Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) employees.

It took about one-and-a-half years for the department to control illicit liquor manufacture in Dhoolpet, which is a well known hub for Gudamba since decades.

Under the supervision of excise commissioner R.V. Chandravadan and the then excise enforcement director Akun Sabharwal, special teams were set up to end the manufacturing of illicit liquor in Telangana.

Early this year, nine districts except Hyderabad were declared Gudamba- free districts, and due to the long exercise in Dhoolpet, Hyderabad achieved the goal on October 2.

The government formed a rehabilitation committee chaired by Hyderabad collector Rahul Bojja and excise deputy commissioner C. Vivekananda Reddy, excise superintendent P. Vara Prasad, Goshamahal MLA Raja Singh and six corporators for rehabilitating illicit liquor manufacturers.

Excise officials and staff under the supervision of the committee adopted many measures to prevent the 1,500 families in Dhoolpet from manufacturing gudamba.

Assistant excise superintendent N. Anji Reddy said the families which left gudamba manufacturing were given training in vocational and general professions. "Telangana Skill Development Mission (TSDM), MEPMA, National Academy of Constructions (NAC), SETWIN, Khadhi Gramodyog and other institutions came forward to provide skill development classes," he said.

From Monday, the government will begin enrolment for the training classes to provide jobs in BPO centres to qualified families at Dhoolpet. Excise officials said the youth will be given computer training with placement chances. "Besides BPO training we will provide driving, beautician, Muggam works, artificial jewellery making and automobile mechanism training," officials said.

The enrolment will be held at the community hall and Samaj Bhavans in and around Dhoolpet.
