Kochi: The Kerala Water Authority is set to miss the deadline for handing over roads trenched for pipeline laying to the city corporation for restoration.

It had given assurance that all the four major roads dug up for utility line laying work will be handed over to the corporation by Wednesday (August 28).

Pandit Karuppan Road, Ravipuram - Valanjambalam Road, Subhash Chandrabose Road and Thammanam - Pullepady Road were dug up for pipeline laying and remained in rundown condition for several months.

“Among the four major roads, works along the Subhash Chandrabose Road could not be completed due to the delay in laying pipeline along a culvert. It will take a few more days to finish the works along the road. The other three roads were handed over to the civic body,” said a source at the KWA.

However, the official added that the replacement of the old pipeline along several roads is yet to be carried out.

During a sit-in staged by mayor Soumini Jain last week at the KWA chief engineer’s office, the top official had promised to complete pipeline laying works and hand over all the roads for restoration by August 28.

The KWA chief engineer had given a written statement that works along the Pandit Karuppan Road will be completed by August 22 while the works along Subhash Chandrabose Road will be finished by August 28.

The mayor had alleged that despite repeated requests, the KWA failed to complete the pipeline laying works before monsoon intensified.

“And it is the civic administration which has to face public protests and criticism from various corners over bad condition of roads. The corporation can’t carry out even the emergency patchworks as the KWA works have not been completed,” the mayor said.
