Hyderabad: State governments should clearly state in their annual Budget the contributions made by the Centre for various schemes, instructions from the Centre have said.

A senior finance official said, “Now, we have to clearly specify the contributions being made by Centre for each and every scheme in the annual Budget. This is being done as per the Centre’s instructions based on recommendations of NITI Aayog.”

The first attempt to monitor the implementation of Central schemes in states directly was made by Rajiv Gandhi, which evoked stiff opposition from regional parties in power in states. N.T. Rama Rao opposed this move stating that it amounted to “encroachment” by the Centre on the rights of states. The Centre later backtracked following resistance from regional parties.
