Hyderabad: Plaint filed against NGRI officials for killing 10 dogs

Hyderabad: About 10 dogs were found poisoned to death inside the compound of the NGRI (National Geophysical Research Institute) at Uppal. A case was registered by the Uppal police in connection with the incident following a complaint from an NGO on Monday.

The People for Animals, an animal rights organisation, which lodged the complaint, alleged that officials of NGRI had resorted to poisoning the strays.

The NGO alleged the NGRI management had ordered a contractor to kill the dogs on its premises. The dogs were poisoned by sweepers and labourers, it claimed. The NGO alleged that about 10 dogs were killed and the carcasses of four canines were found on the NGRI premises by a volunteer of the NGO.

Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and also under the Indian Penal Code for probe. The carcasses have been sent to a government veterinary hospital for post-mortem.

This is the third incident of killing of strays in the last two months in the city. A few days back, 150 stray dogs were allegedly poiso-ned and dumped in Konga-ra forest, 40 km from Saroor Nagar. The stray dogs were reportedly picked up from Jillelaguda. In March, 11 dogs were found poisoned to death at the Malaysian Township in Kukatpally.

On October 10 last year, 80 dogs had been poisoned by residents of Sanskruti Township near Annojiguda.
