Bengaluru: The spread of drug abuse in the silicon city is on the rise with  more and more young adults as well as children are getting hooked to it. City doctors cite peer pressure and mental stress are the main reasons for rise in drug addiction among the youth.

Amongst the number of drug rackets busted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), most of the accused are college students and youths. A NCB official said they are closely monitoring the situation.

This year’s International day against drug abuse and illicit trafficking had the theme, "Listen First - Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe.”

Dr Kishore Kotha, Consultant Paediatric Neurologist, BGS Gleneagles Global Hospitals said the most frequently abused substances among adolescents include alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, hashish, over-the-counter drugs such as dextromethorphan and pseudoephedrine, hallucinogens: LSD, mushrooms, inhalants: glue, lighter fluid, whitener, gasoline or paint thinner, narcotic painkillers: codeine and morphine.
