14 injured in jallikattu in Namakkal district

On the occasion of Kanuma festival, Jallikattu is celebrated in many parts of Chittoor district. The organisers had not even cared about the warnings given by the police.

Namakkal: As many as 14 persons, mostly bull-tamers were injured in a jallikattu conducted at Senthamangalam near here on Saturday in which 260 bulls participated.

State minister for Electricity, Prohibition and Excise, Mr. P Thangamani inaugurated the jallikattu by taking oath in the presence of Social Welfare minister, V Saroja. The Namakkal district collector Ms. M Aisa Mariyam chaired the event.

 Of the 260 bulls which participated from various districts including Salem, Tiruchy, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur and Madurai, they brought the flavor of jallikattu from the southern districts to the western belt of Tamil Nadu.  

In all, 249 bull-tamers took part in two sessions, on in the morning and another in the afternoon. Successful bull-tamers were given prizes including sofa, cot, mixer, cookware, gold coin, silver coin and chair. Fourteen persons including bull-tamers and viewers were injured at the event and they were given first aid. Some of the injured persons who required further treatment, were sent to Namakkal government hospital by ambulance.
