Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology — Hyderabad (IIT-H) will undertake a study on the impact of age on In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF). Couples in north India who are looking to conceive through IVF will be observed as subjects.

The project, which is titled “A Preliminary Study of Ageing and Assisted Reproduction in India”, has been sanctioned Rs 25 lakh under the Wellcome UK Small Projects Grant for 2018.

Work on the project will commence in April 2018. And a conference on Reframing the Biological Clock: Exploring Ethnographic Research on Ageing and Reproduction will be held in August.

The study will focus on various aspects of the ageing reproductive body, and stereotypical notions of  childbirth and families and emerging issues regarding the biological clock.

It will be led by Dr Anindita Majumdar, an Assistant Professor from the Department of Liberal Arts of IIT-H.  “The aim of the study is to contribute conceptually, and through field data, to research on assisted conception, infertility and reproduction in India. This includes a larger research project that will look at the impact that societal and environmental factors have regarding declining fertility in urban India,” Dr Majumdar said.
