Thiruvananthapuram: The warden of the hostel of the Government School for Deaf and Dump at Jagathy was arrested on Wednesday on complaints of sexually exploiting a sixth standard student.

The accused was identified as Jean Jackson. Museum Police recorded his arrest and produced him before the magistrate who remanded him to judicial custody.

The police registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, enacted to provide a robust legal framework for the protection of children against sexual assault, harassment and pornography, while safeguarding their interest at every stage of the judicial process.

Police remained tight-lipped about the incident without revealing more details.

There were allegations of the education department which runs the school trying to hush-up the case following the delay in taking department-level action against the accused.

Earlier, All-Kerala Parents' Association of Hearing Impaired (AKPAHI) had taken out a march to the office of the DPI demanding his suspension.

It was the second case of sexual abuse of disabled children reported in the city during the past two months.

In August, a math teacher identified as Santhosh Kumar of Cheruvikkal Government UP School near Sreekaryam was arrested by the Sreekaryam Police on charges of abusing an autistic child. The teacher had been helping the child in his studies giving extra classes.

As per the complaint lodged by his parents, the boy studying in the third standard was abused multiple times taking him to the bathroom on the first floor after giving him chocolates and showing pornographic pictures.

The teacher later threatened him by saying he will kill his mother in case he told her about the incident.
