Chennai: Traffic on the north Beach stretch was affected for close to an hour after a driver of a MTC bus lost control of his vehicle while on the RBI subway and drove the vehicle over the centre median. The bus came to a halt after hitting the subway wall. More than 40 passengers in the bus had a lucky escape with no injuries, police said.

The incident happened around 9 45 am. The MTC bus (route no.102) plying from Broadway to Kannagi Nagar was being driven by Seenan (37). The driver told police that he swerved the vehicle towards the right to avoid hitting a motorbike, which overtook him from the left. In a matter of seconds, the bus climbed over the median and got itself into an awkward position in the subway.

Traffic personnel from the Elephant Gate traffic investigation wing rushed to the scene and moved the driver to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for treatment. The passengers were provided an alternative bus. Meanwhile, police blocked one side of the subway leading to the War Memorial, diverting vehicles through the service lanes. A crane had to be deployed to clear the bus.
