THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A. P. Abdullakutty is aiming for a ministerial berth in the Narendra Modi government.

Sources said when he met Mr Modi and BJP president Amit Shah on Monday, he told them it would help woo minorities to the BJP.

He also told reporters that he would join the party without much delay.

There were reports that he is likely to join the BJP on Tuesday, which did not happen.

The BJP camp claims he was buying time to bargain for a lucrative position as he will be unable to survive in Kannur otherwise.

“Kerala BJP leadership is in the dark as to whether he will get that. We do not know whether Mr Modi and Mr Shah will admit him to appease minorities,” a state general secretary told DC.

Mr Abdullakutty has been living in Mangalore in Karnataka since he came under physical attack by CPM in Kannur that he represented in the Lok Sabha twice for the party.

He later joined the Congress and got elected on its ticket twice to the Assembly. He remains wholly isolated in his hometown where the BJP is not a force to reckon with.

Nalin Kumar Kateel is the local BJP MP in Mangalore, and he is already familiar with the Kerala scene, especially the border districts of Kasaragod and Kannur.
