HYDERABAD: The state cabinet will meet on May 30 to discuss and take a decision on the extension of lockdown in the state.

The meeting to be chaired by Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao will discuss in detail about the implementation and impact of lockdown in the state since May 12 and the need to extend the lockdown further to check the spread of coronavirus.

The state government had imposed a night curfew across the state from 8pm to 7 am from April 20 after Covid second wave led to a steep increase in coronavirus positive cases and deaths. It was followed by the imposition of 20-hour lockdown from May 12 from 10 am to 6 am with four-hour relaxation from 6 am to 10 am. The lockdown was initially imposed for 10 days until May 22 and subsequently extended till May 30.

Official sources said that the government was in favour of extending the lockdown by a week until June 7 initially and further by another week until June 14 depending on the situation after June 7.

The health department submitted a report to the state government stating that the night curfew and lockdown since April 20 had contributed to a significant reduction in corona positive cases in the state and to ensure that this benefit is not lost, it suggested extension of lockdown further. The cabinet will discuss the suggestions of the health department and take a decision on extension of lockdown.

This apart, the cabinet would also discuss agriculture, crops, the ongoing paddy procurement process, availability of seeds and fertilisers, curbing the supply of spurious seeds ahead of kharif season set to begin on June 1.
