CHENNAI: The Septage Management Guidelines issued by the Tamil Nadu government in 2014 to regulate septic tank design, transporters license and issues related to effectively managing sewage faded out within less than six months. And the result was overflowing community and public toilets, stinking buildings and not to forget the humiliating ranking in Swachh Survekshan Survey 2017.

In a move aimed at bringing the guidelines back into effect, the Tamil Nadu Urban Sanitation Programme (TNUSSP) under the aegis of the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (Maws) is going to launch an app called Muzhu Sugadharam by June.

“The application will provide accurate data about septic tanks in households, areas having access to containment, number of toilets built under Swachh Bharat scheme, number of sewage truck operators, location of sewage treatment plants and the technologies they use and so on. This way we can know where we are lacking,” Kavitha Wankhade, team leader TNUSSP, told Deccan Chronicle.

The information on the app will include all urban local bodies (ULB) including 12 corporations, 24 municipalities and 124 town panchayats.

A software firm called Microware has completed designing and developing of the app and the government approved it.

Following the development of the application, orientation programmes for ULB officers on the usage and application of the app are being held.
