Lorry runs amok in Tiruvallur, kills two

The lorry was transporting crushed stones to a construction site in Ponneri, said the police.

Chennai: Two persons were killed in Red Hills, in Chennai, on Monday morning when a speeding tipper lorry ran amok.

The lorry driver ran over two bikes and hit a truck parked on the road, which resulted in the death of two motorists.

 The accident took place on the outskirts of the city, near Red Hills in Tiruvallur. The police said that it occurred at around 9 am near the Sethupakkam junction, as vehicles were waiting at the signal.

The victims were identified as 54-year-old Johnson, a security guard from Ponneri, and his friend Chandrababu, 48, of Avadi. The accident also left Johnsons’s 13-year-old son Sujith injured.

Madhavaram traffic investigation police told reporters, “A  tipper lorry that was heading towards Ponneri went out of control, reportedly after its brakes failed, and rammed the vehicles at the signal, killing two persons on the spot. Chandrababu was alone on his motorbike, while Johnson was with his son on another bike.”

The lorry was transporting crushed stones to a construction site in Ponneri, said the police. The driver of the lorry sustained minor injuries and is undergoing treatment at the Stanley government hospital.

“The driver said that failure of the brakes resulted in the accident, but a report from technical experts will ascertain the exact reason,” the police said in a statement.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to the Stanley government hospital for post mortem. The Madhavaram traffic investigation police have registered a case and the investigation is underway.
