Hyderabad: The Telangana State government has decided to accord 50 per cent reservation in the gram panchayat posts to women.  The government has also finalised district-wise reservations.

About 12,751 gram panchayats in the state are gearing up for the elections. However, 6,378 Gram Panchayats were reserved for women. In the scheduled area, 1,281 gram panchayats are allotted to the SC and 1,177 gram panchayats, which have 100 percent ST population, were allotted to the STs.

In the non-scheduled area having 10,293 gram panchayats, 688 are allotted to ST, 2,113 are allotted to SC, 2,345 are allotted to the BCs and 5,147 were left unreserved. The BCs, who are fighting for the 34 per cent reservation, may get disappointed as the government has allotted merely 23 per cent of the seats to the BCs in the Non-Scheduled category.
