Chennai: The Madras high court adjourned to October 27, a petition seeking a direction to the Election Commission and the AIADMK to conduct elections to the party's general secretary post. Justice K. Ravichandrabaabu adjourned the petition filed by Nalaperumal, an AIADMK member from Pollachi, after his counsel sought more time to engage a senior counsel for submitting their arguments.

In the petition, Nalaperumal submitted that the AIADMK general council convened by Chief Minister K.  Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam led  groups on September 12, was against the party rules.

The council had abolished the party general secretary's post without  following the rules and regulations of the party. Hence, he sought the Election Commission to direct O. Panneerselvam, party co-ordinator to hold elections for the post of general secretary and also other office-bearers. He also submitted that V. K.  Sasikala was appointed as interim general secretary in the party general council meeting held on December 29 last year, violating rules of the party. As per AIADMK rules, the general secretary shall be elected by primary members of all party units in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,  Kerala and Puducherry.

He had made several representations to the Election Commission highlighting the issue. However, without ascertaining who would become the next general secretary or take responsibility of the party's  administration, the EC had called the two rival camps of the AIADMK in connection with disputes over the 'two leaves' symbol case, said Nalaperumal.
