Hyderabad: Repairs will begin soon on the Miyapur-Kukatpally road on the new Bombay Highway, which has become a death trap for pedestrians. The road comes under the jurisdiction of the National Highways Authority of India, so the state government asked the Centre to develop the road, which was black-topped a decade ago. The road is routinely damaged during the rains and some patchwork repair follows. Things got worse after work on the Metro from Miyapur to LB Nagar began, in 2013.

Following a news report in this newspaper on August 31, about the poor condition of the road and how it endangered the lives of pedestrians and motorists, minister K.T. Rama Rao visited the road and directed officials to take action. Some patchwork repair was carried out at Kalamandir Y Junction at Kukatpally and other places. Due to the heavy rains last month, the condition of the road deteriorated further and several accidents occurred on the road from Bharatnagar road overbridge to Miyapur.

Kukatpally ACP, traffic, Pagadala Ashok wrote several letters to the National Highways Authority of India seeking immediate repairs. The roads and buildings minister also approached the Union government to take action, as this is one of the main corridors from Patancheru to LB Nagar. Responding to this, the Centre sanctioned '16 crore for laying a 6.4 km BT road from Bharatnagar road overbridge to Hydernagar and assured the state government it would develop the entire road in phases.

R&B department executive engineer K. Srinivas said short tenders had been called. “We’ll open the tenders on November 7 and from the very next day the contractor will begin the work,” he promised. Regarding another stretch, he said that the NHAI had sanctioned funds for the development of the road from Miyapur to LB Nagar. “These works will begin next month on 19 km of the 30-km road. We will lay the new BT road at locations where it is immediately needed,” he said. Besides NHAI, Metro Rail has sanctioned Rs 1 crore for repair of the road.
