Karimnagar: Backward class welfare minister Gangula Kamalakar handed over cheques worth Rs 95 lakh to members of around 19 self-help groups (SHG) at a meeting here in Huzurabad in Karimnagar district on Friday. The amounts were pending for the past several months.

Speaking on the occasion, Kamalakar came down heavily on former minister and BJP leader Etala Rajendar for not utilising the money sanctioned by the state government for the betterment of women and accused him of not bringing myriad issues faced by women in the constituency to the notice of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao.

Kamalakar said when the state government was sanctioning money without any interest to the SHGs and providing many other facilities like Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak, the former minister never brought the issues of women in this region to the notice of the Chief Minister.

Rajendar used his power only to increase his wealth and protect his properties, but never bothered about the development of his constituency and the people who voted for him, he added.

Kamalakar said when the girl child lived happily, then only the society would be happy. Chandrashekar Rao always tried to keep the girl child and women happy and that was why he introduced several schemes for their wellbeing, the minister said.

After sanctioning a permanent building for the SHG Federation, Kamalakar said Rs 50 lakh would be released for the structure within two days. He also assured the members of SHGs to release Rs 83 lakh which was still pending very soon and directed the officials of the concerned departments to take necessary steps for the same.

Kamalakar said when Chandrashekar Rao was striving hard for women’s empowerment by introducing various welfare schemes, Rajendar treated all such schemes as useless. People should teach such leaders a fitting lesson, he appealed.

No other party in the country introduced such welfare schemes like that of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the state, he said adding that the people of Huzurabad always stood for development, and they definitely would bless the TRS in the upcoming byelection in Huzurabad.

Municipal commissioner Swarupa Rani, MEPMA project director Ravinder, municipal chairperson Gande Radhika, vice-chairman Kolipaka Nirmala and TRS leader Basavaraju Saraiah were among those who were present.
