Kerala High Court seeks explanation on Pampa river report

Kochi: The Kerala High Court has sought an explanation from the State Government on the report submitted by the Sabarimala Special Commissioner on the short and long term measures needed to be taken to restore Pamba river to its original state, by removing mud, sand and debris, after the August floods.

The report says that a bridge should be built at Pamba Triveni which should not be affected by floods, as recommended by the National Earth Sciences Study Centre. It says that co-ordination of various departments is needed for the implementation of the various recommendations of the study centre.

There is a recommendation to use a portion of the money collected from devotees to revive the river.

 There should be steps to stop discharge of waste of various sorts to the river. It says that the current bridge at Triveni does not have sufficient height and hence a better bridge not to be touched by floods is needed.

Various agencies like Kerala State Electricity Board, Irrigation Department, Forest Department, State Disaster Management Authority should be taken along in the revival process.
