Kochi police picks up 500 under Operation Cobra

Among the arrested include more than 100 notorious goons. Cases have been registered for the sale and use of drugs also.

The body was fished out by firefighters from Punalur on Thursday morning and has been kept at Punalur taluk hospital mortuary.

Kochi: More than 500 people including members of drug mafia, goons, long-absconding accused and history sheeters were arrested by the city police in the last five days as part of the ongoing operation King Cobra that launched last week.

Among the arrested include more than 100 notorious goons. Cases have been registered for the sale and use of drugs also.

As many as 274 accused were arrested in the first day itself. Of this, 40 were notorious goons. Shaji alias Thammanam Shaji, Sudhi alias Perikkad Sudhi, Anish alias Dosthi Anish, Vijayendran, Ravi alias Vikkan Ravi, Lenin Perumbadappu, Shammi Perumbadappu and Kovalam Martin were among the arrested.

Besides, the police have conducted raids at hotels, home stays, lodges, clubs, private flats, guest houses during these days in search of absconding people. Besides, around 30 anti-social elements were detained under preventive custody rules. The operation was launched at the instance of city police commissioner S. Surendran with the aim of cracking down all anti-social activities in the city.

Meanwhile, the city police imposed traffic regulations in the city in order to reduce the traffic jams caused by heavy vehicles. Trucks and other goods vehicles will not be permitted to enter the city via Vyttila, Palarivattom, Ghosree bridge or Thoppumpady during day time.

Theatres, shopping malls and other large shops are directed to provide parking lots and no vehicles will be allowed to park on the road where traffic is heavy. The long-distance travel buses will not be allowed to park on the road during the halts. Flex boards that obstruct free traffic will be removed and actions will be taken, the police said.
