PM Modi in New York for 74th UN meet

During his 7-day stay in US, PM will also inaugurate the Gandhi Solar Park at the UN headquarters in New York on September 24.

New Delhi: Winding up his Houston visit in style with “Howdy Modi”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly. He was received by India’s Ambassador and Perma-nent Representative to the UN, Syed Akbarau-ddin, and other Indian diplomats.

 At the UN, PM will participate in sessions on Climate Change, Susta-inable Development Goa-ls, and Universal Health Coverage among other events in New York and will meet India’s various regional and multilateral partners. He will also speak at the UNGA.

“Ayushman Bharat is more than just a healthcare scheme -- it is a beacon of hope to more than 50 crore of India’s most vulnerable people. It is breaking the vicious cycle of poverty & disease while making healthcare affordable and accessible," PM tweeted ahead of his interaction with his counterparts and meetings on climate change, SDGs and universal health.

On the sidelines of the UN Security General Summit on Climate Change and the high level meeting on Universal Health Coverage, PM Modi will also have bilateral meetings with Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, Italian PM Giuseppe Conte, Namibian President Hage Geingob, and Maldives President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih.

In addition to this, Mr Modi will have a meeting with UNICEF Executive Director, Ms. Henrietta H Fore and attend Leaders’ Dialogue on Strategic Responses to Terrorist and Violent Extremist Narratives. India is expected to push for early conclusion of the discussions on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) which is struck over several years.

PM Modi got a rousing welcome from the Indian diaspora in Houston on Sunday where he, along with the US President Mr Donald Trump, addressed a gathering of nearly 50,000 people.

"Moments from Houston that will always remain a part of my memory. I thank all those who came for the #HowdyModi programme. The event was lively, showcasing the special features of Indian culture and accomplishments of the Indian diaspora," PM tweeted on Monday.

"Dear @POTUS @realDonaldTrump, your presence at #HowdyModi in Houston was a watershed moment in India-USA ties. Since assuming office, you have been a steadfast friend of India and the Indian community. Your presence indicates your respect towards India and the Indian diaspora," PM said in another tweet thanking President Trump for his participation.

Meanwhile, a heartwarming video clip of an Indian youngster finding success in getting a selfie with PM Modi and President Trump at the NRG Stadium in Houston went viral on Monday with several terming the click as the "selfie of the life."

back in India, former Congress MP Milind Deora has heaped praise on Mr Modi for the latter's Houston event, where Mr Trump was present. The former Union minister said Mr Modi's address showcased India's soft power diplomacy. “PM Modi's Houston address was a momentous first for India's soft power diplomacy.Donald Trumps hospitality and recognition of Indian Americans' contributions makes us proud," Milind Deora tweeted after the "Howdy, Modi" event.
