Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday called upon legislators to promote water literacy in their respective areas in a big way .

He said the state had witnessed one of the worst droughts of the century last year. From June to August there was 21 per cent deficit in monsoon rain. Not much rainfall is expected during the forthcoming North West Monsoon beginning in September.

Under these circumstances the legislators have an important role to play in encouraging water conservation activities at the local level.

Mr Vijayan was speaking at orientation programme organised for MLAs at the Legislative Complex.

Legislators can play a major role in creating awareness about the use of water and drought prevention activities.

He emphasised the reuse of water for agriculture and farming purposes. The entire rain water received by the state needs to be conserved. As the ground water level is depleting  fast, steps should be taken to ensure that rain water reaches the wells. This can raise the ground water level in the area. The Chief Minister said under the Haritha Keralam Mission, efforts were on the clean ponds, wells and streams.
