From fallow to green, Kottayam shows the way

Lands which were lying uncultivated for the past three years come under the category of the fallow land.

The decision, taken by the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, comes less than a year before next general election.

KOTTAYAM: The district has set a record by cultivating paddy in the largest area of  fallow land in 2017-18. According to the district agricultural office,  paddy farming was held in 835 hectares out of 1,615 hectares  of  fallow land in various places in the district.  Lands which were lying uncultivated for the past three years come under the category of the fallow land.

The district agricultural office had given Rs 30,000 for cultivating one hectare of fallow land.  Seeds and micro-nutrients were given free to the farmers. A sum of Rs25,000 was   given to owner-farmer, Rs 5,000 to the owner and Rs 25, 000 to the  one who does  the farming. 

"The harvesting will be completed by the middle of April. The rest of the  land  will be cultivated next year,"  principal agricultural officer S. Jayalalithaa told DC.
