Hyderabad: The careless manner in which the HMWSSB-has appointed contractors work was highlighted yet again on Thursday when a trench kept open after laying a water pipeline at Balanagar claimed yet another life. One Oruganti Chandrashekar Rao fell into the open trench and was killed on the spot.

The contractor, Megha Engineering Infrastructure Ltd-MEIL is carrying out work related to laying a drinking water pipeline under the Rs 1,900 crore HUDCO project in the peripheral zones of the city — Kukatpally, Quthbullapur, Rajendranagar, Balanagar, Uppal, L B Nagar and Kapra. Different contractors are working on different stretches.

Megha Engineering had completed the work on the Balanagar to IDPL stretch, but kept the trench open without any particular reason.

Meanwhile, the city water board officials are yet to officially announce what action it will take against the contractor as the matter is still being investigated by police and other authorities.

The MD of HMWSSB, M. Dana Kishore, said, “Based on the police report, strict action will be initiated against the contractor responsible. Looking at the site, it was found precautionary measures such as barricades and ribbon around the trench were found.”
