New York: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said that the original Congress movement was an NRI (non-resident Indian) movement.

“Mahatma Gandhi was an NRI. Jawaharlal Nehru came back from England. Ambedkar, Patel, Maulana Azad, every one of them went to the outside world, saw the outside world, returned to India and used some of the ideas that they had got and transformed India,” Mr Gandhi said. Also included in the list was Varghese Kurien, father of the white revolution in India.

Mr Gandhi, 47, was speaking to about 2,000 supporters at an event in New York to mark the conclusion of his fortnight-long tour of the US during which he interacted with think-tanks, students, politicians and academics to discuss his vision for India. Gandhi said India had shown the world how to live in harmony. “There are forces in our country that are dividing it,” he said.
