10 killed, 17 injured as bus falls into canal in Telangana

17 injured are treated at Khammam; cranes used to take out bus.

Khammam: In a major road accident, ten persons were killed when a private bus coming from Hyderabad fell into the Nagarjunasagar Project Left Canal at Nayakangudem under Kusumanchi mandal in the wee hours of Monday.

Seventeen persons have been injured in the mishap and the injured are undergoing treatment at the district headquarters hospital in Khammam.

The deceased have been identified as Durga Rao, Subba Reddy, Vijaya, Moksha, Sravani, Ashok, Raju, Ajaruddin, Laxmi and Prasanth. The private bus, ‘Yatra Genue,’ plying between Hyderabad and Kakinada daily plunged from the bridge at 2.45 hours on Monday.

About three feet of rain water was in the canal. There was no person near the spot to rescue the victims and they were in the wreckage of the bus for two hours.

Two persons came out from the bus and informed locals about the accident. After another two hours, the fishermen, who came to Palair reservoir for fishing, noticed the mishap. They rescued seven persons from the bus and took them to the hospital. It was difficult to bring out the persons seated in first three rows of the bus, as they were submerged in the water.

Two cranes were brought from surrounding towns and used to extract the victims from the bus.
