Chennai: Chennaiites on Friday suffered April’s hottest day in more than 10 years. The sweltering heat saw city roads wear a deserted look till late evening with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam weather stations recording 40.8 and 41.8 degree Celsius respectively.

The oppressive heat brought weather bloggers alive on the social media even as the city’s twittearti shared their heat woes. Apparently, a century-old record could be beaten if the heat wave continues – it was in 1908 that the city touched 42.8 Celsius in April.

Recording the drastic increase in temperature as the mercury soared in the space of just a day, Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, S. Balachandran explained that the rise was due to dry westerly winds blowing towards the northern part of the state. For the next 48 hours, the uncomfortable weather will continue. “
