RK Nagar bypoll: Three-tier security for strong room

Police sources said that a three-tier security has been put in place in Queen Mary's college.

Chennai: City police commissioner AK Viswanathan inspected the security at the strong room where the electronic voting machines are secured. The EVM machines from all the 256 polling booths in RK Nagar constituency have been locked up at the Queen Mary’s college on Kamarajar Salai. Results will be declared on December 24 (Sunday).

Police sources said that a three-tier security has been put in place in Queen Mary’s college. Apart from minor skirmishes, City police said that polling for the byelection went off peacefully without any untoward incidents. Commissioner AK Viswanathan visited the polling booths during the day to oversee the security arrangements in place.

City police teams headed by Joint commissioner (North), Prem Anand Sinha and paramilitary personnel were on their feet throughout the day to ensure smooth polling.

This is the first by-election faced by Edappadi K. Palanisamy’s ten-month-old government and much is at stake for the AIADMK, especially after the merger of the Palanisamy and O. Panneerselvam factions.
