Hyderabad: Osmania University on Thursday said that it was fully prepared to host the Indian Science Congress, which was abruptly postponed earlier in the day.

In a statement, the university said, “Several committees worked for the past three months tirelessly to ensure smooth conduct of the event. In fact, the university changed the examination schedule for this purpose. At one point in time, the university was flexible and was willing to have the inaugural outside the campus and the remaining sessions on the campus even if it meant incurring more expenditure and inconvenience.”

The statement issued by Registrar Gopal Reddy said, “We were preparing for the event and every minute detail had been worked out and suddenly we were informed by the Indian Science Congress Association that the event is indefinitely postponed. We don’t know specifically what the reason behind the postponement of the event is. Recent protests and student suicide in the university must be the reason as the association is watching and observing everything based on which they might have taken the decision’’.

He added, “The Indian Science Congress Association will hold a meeting in Kolkata on December 27. In that meeting, the fresh dates of the event will be decided. We have received intelligence reports, following which we the event was postponed”.

Following a student’s suicide on campus, protests erupted causing a tense situation on the campus. The university hoped that the Congress would be held in the near future.
