Demonetisation: Gram panchayats in Telangana districts collects Rs 34.65 crore
The total tax demand including arrears in 30 districts except Hyderabad is Rs 419.74 crore.
Hyderabad: Thanks to the demonetisation of high currency notes, gram panchayats in the state have become financially sound. From November 11 to 19, the gram panchayats collected about Rs 34.65 crore.
Medchal district has collected the most property tax, Rs 9 crore, while Kumaram Bheem district collected the least, Rs 13.96 lakh. Officials said gram panchayats had never collected so much revenue in 10 days.
While the state government has been hit hard with the demonetisation of high value currency notes, the local bodies are earning more revenues with long-pending outstanding arrears being cleared by the public.
Out of the 31 districts in the state, nine – Medchal, Ranga Reddy, Sangareddy, Nizamabad, Medak, Khammam, Yadadri, Siddipet and Nalgonda – have collected property tax in crores of rupees.

Officials said that if the Centre extended the November 24 deadline for paying taxes with old notes till the end of this month, gram panchayats would earn much more revenues.
