Hyderabad: Injuries due to bursting crackers during Diwali continue with three new cases reported at Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital on Saturday, bringing the cracker-related injuries to 58. Two of the new victims are children from rural areas in Medak.

Ravinder Goud, hospital superintendent, said, “We already operated two children but we cannot comment on their vision. There corneas have been affected.”

Sapna, an 18-year-old engineering student from GNEC, Ibrahimpatnam, is still in a critical condition and doctors are not sure on restoring her vision after a continuous treatment. The hospital is planning to conduct a cornea transplantation drive as most cracker-related injuries affect the corneas. However, the drive cannot be conducted as doctors say that the eye region of the patient has already undergone trauma due to the cracker related-injury and the surgery will cause further trauma.

“Patients will have to wait. By the end of four weeks, the results of all the ten surgeries we have done can be known and then we can begin the task of transplantation,” said Ravinder.
