CHENNAI: Amidst reports of a rising dropout rate in schools, School Education Minister K. A. Sengottaiyan has asserted that about 1.68 lakh students more have been enrolled in schools this year.

The Minister, who painted a rosy picture of the school education scenario, said that the additional enrollment of 1.68 lakh students this year was an encouraging factor.

Speaking to reporters in Gobichettipalayam in Erode district in the State on Sunday, Mr. Sengottaiyan said about 82,000 teachers are waiting to be posted to various schools. "The teachers would be appointed subject-wise, soon," he said.

Also, from this year, the State government would provide free shoes to the students of government schools, instead of slippers as has been given all these years.
