Hyderabad: Telangana irrigation department on Saturday conducted the first dry run test of the first pump at Kaleshwaram project.  "The 139-MW pump is believed to be the largest motor used for irrigation purpose in the world. The remaining motors in the 8th package will be completed by September and hopefully we will lift water from Yellampalli to Mid Manair in October," said irrigation minister T. Harish Rao.

During the dry run, the motor performed at full capacity, said engineers. A total of 86 motors are being set up in 19 pump houses under Kaleshwaram project. The pumps are manufactured by public-sector company BHEL using indigenous technology.

Mr Rao said: "Once sixth, seventh and eighth packages are completed by October, that water will be lifted to Mid Manair from Yellampalli project. I congratulate all the engineers and workers involved in making this dry run a success. We have seven motors in the 8th package which will lift 2tmc of water every day.” 18 sub-stations are being set up for power supply to the project. The 400KV sub-station at Laxmipur has been completed. With this, we successfully operated dry run of the first motor."
