Tamil Nadu witnesses 40 per cent dip in UPSC exam results

Chennai: Due to the fewer vacancies in IAS, IPS and other services notified this year, Tamil Nadu has witnessed roughly around 40% dip in the number of candidates qualifying for the interview (personality test) compared to the previous year.

The Union Public Service Commission has released the results of civil services (main) exam on Thursday.

Of 10,400 candidates who appeared for the main exam, 1994 candidates have qualified for personality test.

"Of 530 candidates who appeared for mains exam from Tamil Nadu, approximately 131 candidates are qualified for the interview," said S.D. Vaishnavi, managing director, Shankar IAS Academy.

“In the previous year, UPSC had notified 990 vacancies whereas in the present year the number of vacancies has come down to 782. The commission will call the candidates only in 1:2.5 ratio to the interview. It has caused the dip in the numbers,” she said.

Even the number of candidates appeared for the main examinations were also less when compared to 13,365 candidates in the previous year.

Israel Jebasingh IAS, founder and director, Officers IAS Academy said details of the results are not known fully. However, he said the total number of students qualified for the interview is less compared to the previous year.

The qualified candidates have to appear for the personality test which is tentatively scheduled to begin from February 4 onwards.

The preliminary exam was conducted on June 3. Totally, 6.5 lakh candidates appeared for the preliminary exam.
