Hyderabad: Illegal Musi river bridge poses threat

HYDERABAD: A tragedy is waiting to happen on the unscientific bridge constructed illegally over the Musi river at Rajendranagar.
A narrow pathway, which passes off as a bridge, is constructed on the river course, channelising water from Himayathsagar when its crest gates are opened. A few big pipes are laid and a cement concrete structure laid over it. The water, mostly dirty from the colonies in Rajendranagar, flows down through the pipes.
A few truck loads of sand have been dumped to make way for the people to cross over from Rajendranagar Dairy Farm and Chintalmet to Sun City. “There is a risk but it reduces the distance by about 10 km. The authorities planned a bridge but nothing has happened so far,” said Mohammed Adnan Siddique, a political party leader from Bandlaguda.
Motorists using the route said that to reach Bandlaguda from Rajendranagar they have to travel through Kismatpur to reach ORR. The other road is via Upparpally which connects Chevella road.
“Either way one has to travel about eight to ten km to cross over the Musi river. Now, several colonies have come up on either side of the Musi river and there is no way to cross,” said Mr Shanker Yadav, a resident of Rajendranagar.
When contacted, Mr T. Prakash Goud, Rajendranagar MLA, said that they had already informed the matter to the government. “A 60-feet-wide bridge is proposed on the Musi river to connect Sun City with Rajendranagar,” he said.
