Hyderabad: PIL seeks ban on killing of chicks

In their petition, the animal rights organisation told the High Court that the egg industry considers most of the chicks useless.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday directed the counsels of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and the Union of India and poultry gaints to get instructions on a public interest litigation over the killing of chicken layers (male).

A High Court Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil Bhaskaran Nair Radhakrishnan and Justice S.V. Bhatt, was dealing with the PIL by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), India, seeking to direct the concerned  authorities to stop the poultry industry from killing unwanted chicks.

In their petition, the animal rights organisation told the High Court that the egg industry considers most of the chicks useless because they cannot produce eggs and are not the type used for meat.
