Tungabhadra overflows, people warned

Ballari: The Tungabhadra river, downstream of the dam in Hosapete in the district, is in spate due to heavy discharge of water.
As usual, the Purandara Mantap and another stone mantap near the bathing ghat, where last rites are performed, have been submerged. The two mantaps are almost inside the river. People coming to Hampi to perform last rites have been cautioned not to venture into the river. Also, Virupapura Gadde, which is across the river, has turned into an island and boats carrying tourists have been warned against venturing into the river. Police and revenue officers sounded an alert and home guards and police personnel were deputed at many places in the heritage site. Mr K.P. Ravikumar, CPI, Hampi police station, said: “We have alerted residents of villages along the river and warned them not to go into the water. We have told ferry and boat operators and fishermen to be careful.”
On Friday, with around 60,000 cusecs inflow, the discharge into the river was around 63,000 cusecs through 22 of the 33 crest gates which have been opened to a height of two feet.
