HYDERABAD: Contractors are shying away from nala desilting works in the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Sources claimed that engineers are hand in glove with the contractors and have been deliberately making sure that there will be a delay in the desilting work.

According to highly placed sources, the work has been delayed ever since the '1.2 crores nala desilting scam came to light, where contractors were submitting fake bills along with fake registration numbers of vehicles used to transport the silt, which turned out to be two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws and cars.

The contractors disclosed that 13 assistant engineers were hand in glove with them and helped get the bills passed without verification. After this, the contractors and engineers had been deliberately keeping away from nala desilting.

Sources claimed that contractors have been doing this for getting certain relaxations in the desilting work.

When queried about this, a senior official, on conditions of anonymity, admitted that there has been a certain delay. However, the official said that the situation has changed over time and the contractors have been participating in the desilting works from a month.

The official said that the Corporation has received 12 tenders, out of total 42 works worth '2.3 crores in the north zone, two out of seven works worth '0.46 crore in the west zone, 83 out of total 88 works worth '10.65 crores in the south zone, 63 out of total 66 works worth '5.72 crores in the central zone and three out of total 28 works worth '3 crores in the west zone.

The official said that the Corporation will soon finalise the tender process and complete desilting by May-end.
