Bengaluru: A 20-year-old youth suffocated to death after a scrap godown near his house caught fire near Shamanna Garden in Byatarayanapura police station limits on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Kaleem (20), a mobile phone shop owner. According to police, Kaleem was sleeping at his house on the first floor of the building, just above the scrap godown.

“The fire took place at around 12 noon on the ground floor of a building, while Kaleem was asleep on the first floor. It is suspected that someone may have thrown lit beedi inside the scrap godown, which resulted in the fire. Prima facie, there was no shot circuit,” the police said. According to police, the fire engulfed the scrap godown and the smoke entered the room on the first floor where Kaleem was asleep. As his mother had locked the door from outside when she left to buy vegetables, Kaleem did not find a way out and died of suffocation. Kaleem was alone at the house when the incident happened.

Fire tenders were pressed into service and the fire officials doused the fire within half an hour. Kaleem was rushed to Gayathri hospital, but was declared brought dead. A case has been registered in Byatarayanapura police station and the owner of the scrap godown Kadeer has been booked for causing death due to negligence.
