Chennai: Rains bring respite
Chennai recorded 10.4cm of rain since Wednesday night.
Chennai: Rain lashed Chennai and surrounding areas on Thursday bringing respite to the generally humid weather. It is also reportedly the wettest day for Chennai since November 2017, tweeted Chennai-based weather blogger Pradeep John. Chennai recorded 10.4cm of rain since Wednesday night.
Among districts, Tiruvallur recorded the highest rainfall at 21 cm. Poondi recorded 20 cms of rainfall on Wednesday. Tiruttani and Thamaraipakkam recorded 15 cms of rainfall while Cholavaram received 13 cms and Thiruvalangadu received 12 cms of rainfall on Wednesday. Nungambakkam also received 74 mm rain till 5 am on Thursday. Suburbs like Madhavaram, Puzhal, Cholavaram, Ponneri and Redhills also witnessed heavy rains through the night. Meenambakkam (9.4cm), Ambattur (8cm), Parry’s Corner (7.9cm), Poonamallee (7.9cm), Marina (7.1cm), KK Nagar (7.7cm), Alandur (6.2cm) and Guindy (5.9cm) also recorded heavy rainfall.
In its latest forecast, Met office has predicted light showers through the day due to upper cyclonic storm. The heavy rainfall in Poondi is expected to bring inflows to the Poondi reservoir, one of the city’s four main water reservoirs. As on Wednesday, the water level at Poondi lake stood at 15 mcft.
The regional MET 48 hour forecast on Wednesday read: “The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas. Maximum and Minimum temperatures are likely to be around 34 and 25 deg Celsius respectively.”
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said a low-pressure area was likely to develop in Bay of Bengal, off the Andhra Pradesh coast, due to a cyclonic circulation and would bring rains to Andhra, Telangana and North Tamil Nadu.
