Mysuru: After battling for life on a ventilator for the past 25 days, 18-month-old Mohan, a Sulawadi temple prasada tragedy victim, was finally taken off the equipment and is now recovering though he may take another 15 days to become completely fit.
Mohan’s grandparents Mallige and Paapanna had been to Kichguth Maramma temple at Sulawadi on December 14 from where they brought the prasada home. Mohan’s mother Sangeetha consumed the prasada and fed him too. While Sangeetha and grandmother Mallige have recovered, Mohan’s grandfather Paapanna passed away.
Meanwhile, of the 104 people who fell ill after consuming the prasada, 101 have been discharged. As most of them are daily wage labourers and are now weak, they are demanding payment of ex-gratia by the state government. So far, the government has announced ex-gratia only for the families of the seventeen deceased.
When contacted, Chamarajnagar DC Ms B.B. Cauvery said they would be submitting a proposal to the government to secure compensation for even those who fell sick but survived.
In a related development, the advocates associations of Mysuru and Chamarajnagar have decided not to defend the accused in the Sulawadi temple tragedy. While the prime accused, junior pontiff of Salur Matha, Mahadevswamy has claimed that an advocate from Kodagu would be appearing for him, the other three accused have sought ten days’ time to appoint advocates.
