Kochi: Indian Coast Guard officer dies in diving accident

The accident is under investigation by a board of inquiry.

Kochi: Assistant Commandant Mohit Dalal, 28, an officer of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), died at Indian Naval Hospital, Sanjivani, on Friday following a diving accident while undergoing training in Kochi on Tuesday. The officer was posted on board Indian Coast Guard ship Rajvir based at Port Blair and was attached to diving school, Naval Base, Kochi, for the ship's diver course.

The officer, who nearly drowned in the accident, was rushed to the naval hospital, INHS Sanjivani. However, he died on Friday evening. Rear Admiral  R.J. Nadkarni, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, along with senior officers of Navy and Coast Guard, laid wreaths on the body of the officer at a ceremony at Government Hospital, Ernakulam, on Saturday.

Mohit Dalal is survived by his parents and a younger brother. According to the Navy, his last rites would be conducted with full military honours at his hometown, Narela, in New Delhi. The accident is under investigation by a board of inquiry.
