CHENNAI: A trough in low-level easterlies is likely to bring light isolated rainfall to coastal parts of Tamil Nadu, Chennai and neighbouring districts in next 24 hours.

The city is to generally remain cloudy, while maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 30 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius respectively, the Regional Meteorological Center said on Monday.

Attributing the temperature drop to sea breeze that is blowing towards north-west, Director of Regional Meteorological Centre, S. Balachandran said that light showers were expected in Chennai on Tuesday  or  Wednesday.

“Various districts including Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Cuddalore and Tiruchirapalli are expected to receive isolated rainfall. The formation of a fresh low-pressure is however unexpected over Bay of Bengal for next five days, as wind pattern will not bring more rains,” he said.

The Regional Meteorological Center said that so far Chennai has recorded 937.3 mm of rainfall, whereas Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam have received 962.2 mm and 977.7 mm of rainfall since October 1 to December 18 this year.

“There is no inference regarding the withdrawal of Northeast Monsoon as isolated rains are expected till the end of December. Rains in coastal areas are expected by December 25,” said weather blogger K. Srikanth.
