CPM says NSS playing caste card, files complaint

THIRUVANANTHPAURAM: CPM has filed a complaint with the Election Commission against UDF candidate K Mohankumar and Nair Service Society (NSS) for allegedly soliciting votes in Vattiyoorkavu invoking caste.

The complaint was filed to EC through CEO by K.C. Vikraman, secretary CPM legislative assembly constituency committee Vattioorkavu. The CPM said it had come to their notice that Mohan Kumar and his fellow UDF leaders were making repeated requests to voters in the constituency on the basis of caste for the byelection being held on October 21. The NSS has openly extended support to Dr K Mohankumar on the basis of caste .

The petition alleged that under the leadership of NSS Thiruva-nanthapuram Taluk Union president, Mr Sangeeth Kumar, office bearers, members of the organisation including women were approaching houses of people belonging to the Nair community with the request to vote for Mohankumar. The UDF candidate also belongs to Nair community.

Workers of NSS women wing of Thiruvananthapuram Taluk Union were campaigning for UDF candidate at Maruthumkuzhi.  The CPM has also enclosed a pho-to of news item and photograph that appeared in a leading Malayalam daily on October 16 in this regard.

The party urged the EC to take action against Mohankumar and the NSS for violating the model code of conduct.
